Jeremy Couper

Jeremy Couper is Head of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Psycho-oncology Research Unit at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Senior Research Fellow in Psycho-oncology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne and a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry team at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. Jeremy works as a clinician specialising in the psychiatric care of physically ill patients at both Peter Mac and St Vincent’s and conducts research into the psychiatric and psychological aspects of cancer. He has conducted, with colleagues, clinical research including longitudinal studies of couples facing a diagnosis of Prostate Cancer and individuals undergoing radiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer. He has led trials of novel couple and individual psychological interventions for Prostate and Head and Neck Cancers as well as collaborating on a trial of a group intervention for Breast and Gynaecological Cancer. This work has led to the development of manualised psychological interventions tailored for specific cancer settings with his most recent work integrating Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction adapted for individual therapy sessions with patients undergoing radiotherapy.
